Mount Whitney Crew Earns Bluenose Status
The 6th Fleet flag ship, USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) visited the waters off the coast of Norway, Sept. 1 and took advantage of a rare Navy tradition of becoming a Bluenose during a ceremony held aboard the ship.

Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to Deploy
Three ships of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 9 -- USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), USS Momsen (DDG 92), and USS Shoup (DDG 86) -- will get underway Sept. 7 from Naval Station Everett for a scheduled routine deployment to the 7th and 5th Fleet Areas of Responsibility.

CG, Navy to Conduct Joint Exercise
The Coast Guard and Navy will be conducting a joint exercise in Cumberland Sound, Ga., on Sept. 8 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to test the Coast Guard's ability to deter, detect and disrupt hostile acts directed at an escorted U.S. Naval vessel.

Navy, CG Ready to Move if Earl Strikes
Earl has put the military on alert. As of Wednesday evening, neither the Navy nor the Coast Guard in Hampton Roads had issued orders to move large numbers of ships in preparation for Earl, although they're ready to go if they have to, officials with both service branches said.
